Pokemon LeafGreen Complete Walkthrough
Pokemon LeafGreen follows a mostly linear journey across Kanto, but several routes, caves, HMs, and story events can make the next objective unclear. Use this progression guide to move through all eight Gyms, defeat Team Rocket, challenge the Elite Four, and unlock the expanded Sevii Islands post-game.
Pallet Town to Pewter City
Choose Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle from Professor Oak, travel through Route 1 to Viridian City to deliver Oak's Parcel, pass Viridian Forest, and defeat Brock at the Pewter Gym to earn the Boulder Badge.
Pewter City to Cerulean City
Travel east through Route 3 and Mt. Moon, defeat Team Rocket inside, and choose either the Dome Fossil or Helix Fossil. Reach Cerulean City, beat Misty for the Cascade Badge, clear Nugget Bridge, and visit Bill at the Sea Cottage.
Cerulean City to Vermilion City
Leave Cerulean through the robbed house and head south through Routes 5 and 6. Board the S.S. Anne, defeat your rival, and receive HM01 Cut from the captain. Use Cut to enter the Vermilion Gym and defeat Lt. Surge.
Vermilion City to Celadon City
Travel through Route 9 and Rock Tunnel to Lavender Town, then use the underground route to Celadon City. Defeat Erika at the Celadon Gym, then raid the Team Rocket Hideout beneath the Game Corner and beat Giovanni for the Silph Scope.
Pokemon Tower and Saffron City
Return to Lavender Town and climb Pokemon Tower with the Silph Scope, defeat the ghost Marowak, and rescue Mr. Fuji for the Poke Flute. Enter Saffron City, clear Team Rocket from Silph Co., receive Lapras, and challenge Sabrina.
Fuchsia City and Safari Zone
Reach Fuchsia City through Routes 12-15 or Cycling Road. Explore the Safari Zone for the Gold Teeth and HM03 Surf, return the Gold Teeth to the Warden for HM04 Strength, and defeat Koga at the Fuchsia Gym.
Cinnabar Island and the First Sevii Visit
Surf to Cinnabar Island, explore the Pokemon Mansion for the Secret Key, and defeat Blaine at the Cinnabar Gym. Accompany Bill to One Island and complete the first Sevii Islands storyline on One, Two, and Three Island.
Viridian Gym and Victory Road
Return to Viridian City after earning seven badges, enter the reopened Viridian Gym, and defeat Giovanni for the Earth Badge. Travel west through Route 22, pass the badge checkpoints, and cross Victory Road to reach Indigo Plateau.
Pokemon League
Prepare a balanced team, healing items, and status recovery at Indigo Plateau. Defeat Lorelei, Bruno, Agatha, and Lance in sequence, then beat the Champion to enter the Hall of Fame.
Post-Game and Sevii Islands
Earn the National Pokedex from Professor Oak, return to the Sevii Islands, and help Celio repair the Network Machine with the Ruby and Sapphire. Explore Four through Seven Island, finish the Team Rocket storyline, and challenge Mewtwo in Cerulean Cave.
Pokemon LeafGreen Pokedex and Locations
LeafGreen contains the original Kanto Pokedex throughout the main adventure and expands the available species after the Pokemon League and National Pokedex progression. This table highlights major Pokemon and useful encounter locations players commonly search for while building their teams.
Bulbasaur
Starter from Professor Oak in Pallet Town. Evolves into Ivysaur and Venusaur. One of three starters per save file, with the easiest opening Gyms against Brock and Misty.
Charmander
Starter from Professor Oak in Pallet Town. Evolves into Charmeleon and the powerful Fire/Flying Charizard. Starts slower against Brock and Misty but excels from Celadon onward.
Squirtle
Starter from Professor Oak in Pallet Town. Evolves into Wartortle and Blastoise, a dependable defensive Water type with reliable Surf coverage for the whole story.
Pikachu
Wild encounter in Viridian Forest during the early story. Evolves into Raichu with a Thunder Stone and is a strong answer to Misty and later Water and Flying Pokemon.
Abra
Wild encounter on Routes 24 and 25. Evolves into Kadabra by level; Alakazam requires trading. One of the best special attackers for the mid and late game.
Vulpix
LeafGreen version encounter on Routes 7 and 8 and inside the Pokemon Mansion. Evolves into Ninetales with a Fire Stone from the Celadon Department Store.
Bellsprout
LeafGreen version encounter on Routes 5, 6, 7, 8, and 12-15. Evolves into Weepinbell and Victreebel with a Leaf Stone, a solid Grass answer for Water and Rock opponents.
Pinsir
LeafGreen version encounter in the Safari Zone. A strong physical Bug type that does not evolve, prized as the counterpart to FireRed's Scyther.
Eevee
Gift Pokemon from the Celadon Mansion area. Evolves into Vaporeon, Jolteon, or Flareon with the matching evolution stone to cover Water, Electric, or Fire.
Lapras
Gift Pokemon from a Silph Co. employee in Saffron City. Guaranteed during the story, with Water and Ice coverage that is excellent for the Elite Four and Lance's dragons.
Snorlax
Static encounter on Routes 12 and 16, awakened with the Poke Flute. Two encounters per save file, offering huge HP and broad TM compatibility.
Johto Pokemon
Additional species appear across the expanded Sevii Islands areas after National Pokedex progression, including Misdreavus, Sneasel, Mantine, and other post-game encounters.
Pokemon LeafGreen Best Team and Starter Guide
Every starter can comfortably complete LeafGreen, but each creates a different early-game experience. Bulbasaur has the easiest opening Gyms, Squirtle provides reliable defensive Water coverage, and Charmander starts slower but becomes a powerful Fire and Flying attacker as Charizard.
Bulbasaur - S Tier
Strong matchups against Brock's Rock/Ground team and Misty's Water Pokemon give it the smoothest opening. Venusaur stays useful all game with status and Grass options. Pair with Nidoking, Jolteon, Lapras, Snorlax, and Dodrio.
Squirtle - A Tier
Strong against Brock and useful against Ground, Rock, and Fire opponents throughout Kanto. Blastoise offers solid defenses and reliable Surf. Misty and Lt. Surge are harder, so add Nidoking, Jolteon, Snorlax, Dodrio, and Kadabra.
Charmander - A Tier
Challenging start against Brock and Misty, but Charizard becomes one of the strongest attackers with Fire and Flying coverage, excellent against Erika. Build support early with Nidoking, Vaporeon, Raichu, Snorlax, and Exeggutor.
Nidoking - Core Pick
Catch Nidoran early on Route 22 or 3. Broad TM compatibility and Ground typing make it especially useful against Lt. Surge and a flexible team slot for nearly any starter.
Jolteon - Core Pick
Very high Speed and an excellent answer to Water and Flying Pokemon. Eevee is guaranteed in Celadon City, so a Thunder Stone turns it into fast Electric coverage for teams without another strong Electric type.
Lapras - Core Pick
Guaranteed gift in Silph Co. with excellent bulk. Water and Ice coverage is ideal for the Pokemon League, and Ice attacks are particularly valuable against Lance's Dragon Pokemon.
Snorlax - Core Pick
Very high HP and strong physical attacking potential from two guaranteed Poke Flute encounters. Low Speed and a Fighting weakness are the only trade-offs for a durable member that fits any team.
Pokemon LeafGreen Gym Leaders and Elite Four
LeafGreen has eight Gym Leaders followed by the Elite Four and Champion at Indigo Plateau. Building several levels above nearby wild Pokemon, carrying healing items, and using favorable type matchups will make these major battles much easier.
Brock
Pewter City Gym with Geodude Lv. 12 and Onix Lv. 14. Water and Grass Pokemon have a major advantage. Charmander players should catch supporting Pokemon such as Mankey or Nidoran first.
Misty
Cerulean City Gym with Staryu Lv. 18 and Starmie Lv. 21. Electric and Grass Pokemon help; Starmie's Speed and strong Water attacks make it the main threat.
Lt. Surge
Vermilion City Gym with Voltorb, Pikachu, and Raichu up to Lv. 24. Ground Pokemon are immune to Electric attacks; Diglett and Dugtrio from Diglett's Cave are especially useful.
Erika
Celadon City Gym with Victreebel, Tangela, and Vileplume up to Lv. 29. Fire, Flying, Psychic, and Ice attacks are straightforward answers for most of her team.
Koga
Fuchsia City Gym with Koffing, Muk, and Weezing up to Lv. 43. Psychic attacks are highly effective, and status healing helps against his defensive Poison team.
Sabrina
Saffron City Gym with Kadabra, Mr. Mime, Venomoth, and Alakazam up to Lv. 43. Bug, Ghost, and strong physical attackers exploit her team's lower physical durability.
Blaine
Cinnabar Island Gym with Growlithe, Ponyta, Rapidash, and Arcanine up to Lv. 47. Surf users perform very well; watch for the stronger Arcanine at the end of the battle.
Giovanni
Viridian City Gym with Rhyhorn, Dugtrio, Nidoqueen, Nidoking, and Rhyhorn up to Lv. 50. Water and Ice coverage handles most of his team while Psychic attacks cover the Nidos.
Lorelei
First Elite Four member with Dewgong, Cloyster, Slowbro, Jynx, and Lapras up to Lv. 54. Electric attacks answer her Water Pokemon, while Fighting and Rock moves cover the rest.
Bruno
Second Elite Four member with Onix, Hitmonchan, Hitmonlee, and Machamp up to Lv. 56. Use Water or Grass against Onix and Psychic or Flying against the Fighting Pokemon.
Agatha
Third Elite Four member with Gengar, Golbat, Haunter, and Arbok up to Lv. 58. Expect sleep, poison, and confusion; fast attackers and status-healing items are useful.
Lance
Final Elite Four member with Gyarados, Dragonair, Aerodactyl, and Dragonite up to Lv. 60. Ice attacks are the key answer to the dragons, and Electric moves handle Gyarados.
Champion
Your rival's balanced team of Pidgeot, Alakazam, Rhydon, a starter-dependent slot, and his fully evolved starter changes with your choice. Save healing items and keep coverage ready for Psychic, Ground, Flying, Water, Fire, and Grass.
Pokemon LeafGreen Legendary Pokemon Guide
Pokemon LeafGreen includes several powerful one-time legendary encounters, plus a roaming Johto legendary determined by your starter choice. Save before fixed encounters, bring plenty of Ultra Balls, and use sleep or paralysis to improve catch chances.
Articuno
Seafoam Islands. Surf and Strength are needed to redirect the water currents and reach the inner chamber. Bring Ultra Balls and a Pokemon that can inflict Sleep or Paralysis, and save before interacting. One-time fixed encounter.
Zapdos
Power Plant, reached by Surfing from Route 10. Ground-type Pokemon resist its Electric attacks while it whittles down. Save before starting the battle. One-time fixed encounter.
Moltres
Mt. Ember on One Island, north through Kindle Road. Water- and Rock-type attacks lower its HP quickly, so weaken carefully to avoid a knockout. Save before the encounter. One-time fixed encounter.
Mewtwo
Cerulean Cave, after becoming Champion, obtaining the National Pokedex, and completing Celio's Ruby and Sapphire quest. The hardest catch in the game: use the Master Ball or a large supply of Ultra Balls with status moves. One-time fixed encounter.
Raikou
Roams across Kanto after the post-game stage if you chose Squirtle. It attempts to flee every turn, so use trapping moves such as Mean Look or the Master Ball. Only one of the three roamers appears per save file.
Entei
Roams across Kanto after the post-game stage if you chose Bulbasaur. Track its changing route through the Pokedex and use a fast Pokemon with a trapping move if you are not using the Master Ball.
Suicune
Roams across Kanto after the post-game stage if you chose Charmander. Track its current area in the Pokedex, prepare a trapping or status strategy, and repeatedly change routes until you meet it.
Snorlax
Routes 12 and 16, awakened with the Poke Flute obtained after the Pokemon Tower storyline in Lavender Town. Two Snorlax encounters are available, and each is a one-time overworld encounter.
Pokemon LeafGreen Sevii Islands Guide
The Sevii Islands begin as a short side adventure during the main story and expand into a larger post-game quest after becoming Champion. Progressing through the islands opens more areas and completes Celio's connection between Kanto and other regions.
One Island - Meet Celio and Receive the Tri-Pass
After defeating Blaine at the Cinnabar Gym, accept Bill's invitation to visit One Island. Meet Celio at the Pokemon Network Center and begin the first Sevii Islands storyline, unlocking travel between One, Two, and Three Island.
Two Island - Visit the Game Corner
Take the Meteorite toward the Two Island Game Corner. The delivery is interrupted because Lostelle, the owner's daughter, is missing, beginning the search on Three Island.
Three Island - Rescue Lostelle
Deal with the biker gang in Three Isle Path and continue through Bond Bridge into Berry Forest. Find Lostelle and defeat the Hypno threatening her to complete the first Sevii Islands visit and continue the Kanto journey.
One Island and Mt. Ember - Begin Celio's Post-Game Quest
After becoming Champion and receiving the National Pokedex, return to Celio. Search Mt. Ember for the Ruby and bring it back to the Pokemon Network Center to receive the Rainbow Pass for Islands Four through Seven.
Four Island - Explore Icefall Cave
Travel through Icefall Cave, obtain HM07 Waterfall, and reach Lorelei. Help her confront Team Rocket inside the cave to advance the Network Machine storyline.
Six Island - Find the Sapphire in Dotted Hole
Travel through Ruin Valley to Dotted Hole and use Cut on its entrance. Reach the Sapphire chamber, where the gem is stolen before you can deliver it, yielding the second password for the Rocket Warehouse.
Five Island - Raid the Rocket Warehouse
Use the two passwords obtained during the Sevii Islands quest to enter the Rocket Warehouse on Five Island. Defeat the remaining Team Rocket members and recover the stolen Sapphire.
One Island - Complete the Network Machine
Return the Sapphire to Celio. With both the Ruby and Sapphire installed, his Network Machine becomes fully operational, completing the major Sevii Islands post-game storyline.
Seven Island - Optional Endgame Areas
Visit Trainer Tower, Sevault Canyon, the Tanoby Key, and the Tanoby Ruins for additional battles, puzzles, and Pokemon encounters after the main island quest.
Pokemon LeafGreen Version Exclusives and Trading
LeafGreen and FireRed share the same main adventure but distribute several Pokemon differently between versions. A complete collection requires trading, and several Pokemon also evolve only when exchanged with another player.
Sandshrew Line
LeafGreen gets Sandshrew and Sandslash while FireRed gets Ekans and Arbok. Trade between versions to obtain the opposite evolutionary family.
Vulpix vs Growlithe
LeafGreen gets Vulpix and Ninetales while FireRed gets Growlithe and Arcanine. Both families use evolutionary stones for their final evolution.
Bellsprout vs Oddish Line
LeafGreen gets the Bellsprout family while FireRed gets the Oddish family. These Grass-type families are among the most important early version differences.
Slowpoke vs Psyduck Line
LeafGreen gets Slowpoke and Slowbro while FireRed gets Psyduck and Golduck. Slowpoke can also become Slowking through a trade evolution with a King's Rock.
Staryu vs Shellder Line
LeafGreen gets Staryu and Starmie while FireRed gets Shellder and Cloyster. Both families use a Water Stone for their evolved forms.
Magmar vs Electabuzz
LeafGreen gets Magmar while FireRed gets Electabuzz. Trading is required to obtain the opposite version's species.
Pinsir vs Scyther
LeafGreen gets Pinsir while FireRed gets Scyther. These rare Bug-type Pokemon are split between the two versions.
Johto Post-Game Exclusives
LeafGreen gets Misdreavus, Sneasel, and Mantine while FireRed gets Murkrow, Delibird, and Skarmory. Trading is needed if you want both species in the same collection.
Kadabra, Machoke, Graveler, Haunter
All four evolve only when traded: Alakazam, Machamp, Golem, and Gengar. Plan trades with another player or a second system to complete these families.
Held-Item Trade Evolutions
Slowpoke with a King's Rock becomes Slowking, Onix with a Metal Coat becomes Steelix, and Seadra with a Dragon Scale becomes Kingdra when traded.
Nintendo Switch Local Wireless
The modern Nintendo Switch release uses nearby-system local wireless trading instead of the original Game Boy Advance Game Link Cable workflow, supporting 2-5 players.
Pokemon LeafGreen Items, TMs and HMs
Many areas of Pokemon LeafGreen are locked behind field moves or story items. This table focuses on the Key Items, HMs, TMs, evolution items, and healing supplies that directly affect exploration, Gym progression, major quests, and Pokemon evolution.
HM01 Cut
Help the S.S. Anne Captain after reaching his cabin in Vermilion City. Cuts small trees blocking routes and optional areas, including the path into the Vermilion Gym.
HM02 Fly
Reach the hidden house west of Celadon City. Provides fast travel to previously visited towns and cities, saving enormous travel time across Kanto.
HM03 Surf
Reach the Secret House deep inside the Safari Zone in Fuchsia City. Allows travel across water and opens the major late-game routes to Cinnabar Island.
HM04 Strength
Return the Gold Teeth from the Safari Zone to the Safari Zone Warden. Moves large boulders and is required in several caves including Victory Road.
HM05 Flash
Received from Professor Oak's aide after recording at least 10 caught Pokemon. Illuminates dark caves such as Rock Tunnel.
HM06 Rock Smash / HM07 Waterfall
Rock Smash comes from the man inside Ember Spa on One Island and breaks cracked rocks. Waterfall is found in Icefall Cave on Four Island and climbs waterfalls for post-game exploration.
Silph Scope
Defeat Giovanni in the Rocket Hideout beneath the Celadon Game Corner. Identifies the ghost Pokemon inside Pokemon Tower so you can progress the Lavender Town story.
Poke Flute
Rescue Mr. Fuji at the top of Pokemon Tower. Wakes the sleeping Snorlax blocking Route 12 and Route 16 for two guaranteed encounters.
Tea and Card Key
Tea from the elderly woman in Celadon Mansion grants access to Saffron City's gates. The Card Key found in Silph Co. opens its locked doors during the Team Rocket raid.
Secret Key and Gold Teeth
The Secret Key from the Pokemon Mansion basement unlocks the Cinnabar Gym. The Gold Teeth picked up in the Safari Zone are traded to the Warden for HM04 Strength.
Ruby and Sapphire
The Ruby is recovered at Mt. Ember and the Sapphire in Dotted Hole before being stolen and recovered from the Rocket Warehouse. Both are required to repair Celio's Network Machine.
TM28 Dig, TM29 Psychic
Dig is earned by defeating the Rocket Grunt behind the burglarized house in Cerulean City. Psychic is received from Mr. Psychic in Saffron City, one of the strongest widely usable special attacks.
Game Corner Prize TMs
Exchange Game Corner Coins for TM13 Ice Beam, TM24 Thunderbolt, TM35 Flamethrower, and TM30 Shadow Ball, the strongest purchasable coverage moves for the Elite Four.
Evolution Stones
Fire, Water, Leaf, and Thunder Stones from the evolution stone counter evolve compatible Pokemon such as Vulpix, Staryu, Weepinbell, Eevee, and Pikachu.
Full Restore and Revive
Full Restore fully heals HP and status for late-game battles, and Revive restores a fainted Pokemon with half HP. Stock up at Indigo Plateau before challenging the Elite Four.
