Pokemon LeafGreen Map: Kanto Region Layout

The pokemon leafgreen map centers on Kanto, a region tied together by numbered Routes 1 through 28, cave systems, and open water. Early progress is linear, but the map opens into loops between Celadon, Saffron, Fuchsia, and Cinnabar once HMs start stacking up.

Western Kanto

  • Pallet Town, Viridian City, Pewter City
  • Route 1, Route 22, Viridian Forest
  • Holds the eighth and final Gym

Northern Kanto

  • Cerulean City, Lavender Town
  • Mt. Moon, Rock Tunnel, Routes 24-25
  • Links the coast to the interior

Southern Kanto

  • Vermilion, Celadon, Saffron, Fuchsia
  • S.S. Anne, Cycling Road, Safari Zone
  • Cinnabar Island sits off the south coast
Reading the Town Map

Open the Town Map from the Key Items pocket. Visited towns light up as you go, and Fly destinations activate once HM02 Fly is claimed from the hidden house on Route 16.

Main Story Route Order

Follow this sequence to cross the map with minimal backtracking.

1

Pallet Town to Pewter City

Take Route 1 north to Viridian City, deliver Oak's Parcel, then cut through Viridian Forest to Pewter City for the Boulder Badge.

2

Mt. Moon to Cerulean City

Cross Routes 3-4 and Mt. Moon, choose a fossil, then earn the Cascade Badge and visit Bill on Route 25.

3

South to Vermilion City

Use Routes 5-6 and the Underground Path, board the S.S. Anne for HM01 Cut, then defeat Lt. Surge for the Thunder Badge.

4

Rock Tunnel to Celadon and Lavender

Pass Route 9 and Rock Tunnel to Lavender Town, then loop to Celadon for the Rainbow Badge, the Silph Scope, and the Tea item.

5

Saffron, Fuchsia, and Cinnabar

Clear Pokemon Tower for the Poke Flute, free Silph Co., grab Surf in the Safari Zone, then Surf south to Cinnabar for the Volcano Badge.

6

Viridian Gym to Indigo Plateau

Return to Viridian City for the Earth Badge, then take Route 22 west past the badge checkpoints and through Victory Road.

Badge Checkpoints

Guards on Route 22 check badges one at a time. Optional areas can be skipped, but all eight badges are required before Victory Road opens.

HM-Gated Areas and Key Dungeons

Large parts of the pokemon leafgreen map stay sealed until specific HMs or Key Items are in hand.

  • HM01 Cut: S.S. Anne captain; opens Vermilion Gym and tree shortcuts.
  • HM02 Fly: Route 16 hidden house; enables fast travel between visited cities.
  • HM03 Surf: Safari Zone Secret House; opens Cinnabar, Seafoam Islands, and the Power Plant.
  • HM04 Strength: Safari Zone Warden after returning the Gold Teeth; required in Victory Road.
  • HM05 Flash: Oak's aide on Route 2 after catching 10 species; lights Rock Tunnel.
  • HM06 Rock Smash: Ember Spa on One Island; clears cracked rocks in the Sevii Islands.
  • HM07 Waterfall: Icefall Cave on Four Island; climbs falls in post-game areas.

Optional dungeons worth marking:

  • Power Plant off Route 10: static Zapdos encounter.
  • Seafoam Islands between Fuchsia and Cinnabar: Articuno, needs Surf and Strength.
  • Diglett's Cave near Vermilion: shortcut to Route 2 and quick Diglett access.
  • Cerulean Cave north of Cerulean: opens after the Champion title and the Network Machine quest; Mewtwo waits inside.
Item Gates

Some barriers use Key Items instead of HMs. Tea from Celadon Mansion opens Saffron's gates, the Poke Flute wakes the two Snorlax on Routes 12 and 16, and the Secret Key from Pokemon Mansion unlocks the Cinnabar Gym.

Sevii Islands Map and Unlock Order

The Sevii Islands form the second mapped region, reached by ferry after the Cinnabar Gym.

  • One Island: Pokemon Network Center, Kindle Road, Mt. Ember with Moltres, Ember Spa.
  • Two Island: small town with the Game Corner and Berry Forest nearby.
  • Three Island: Bond Bridge, Three Isle Path, and the biker gang story event.
  • Four Island: Icefall Cave, HM07 Waterfall, and Lorelei's Rocket encounter.
  • Five Island: Rocket Warehouse, Water Labyrinth, Resort Gorgeous.
  • Six Island: Ruin Valley and Dotted Hole, where the Sapphire is stolen.
  • Seven Island: Sevault Canyon, Tanoby Key, Tanoby Ruins, Trainer Tower.

The Tri-Pass covers Islands One to Three during the story. After becoming Champion and starting Celio's quest, the Rainbow Pass unlocks Islands Four to Seven.

Map Completion Checklist:

  • Earn all eight badges across Kanto
  • Collect all seven HMs
  • Wake both Snorlax on Routes 12 and 16
  • Reach all seven main Sevii Islands
  • Finish Celio's Ruby and Sapphire quest
  • Open Cerulean Cave and catch Mewtwo
Post-Game Map Rewards

Repairing the Network Machine restores full trading functions and spreads additional Johto species encounters across the expanded Sevii Islands map.

Pokemon LeafGreen Map FAQ

Q: Is the LeafGreen map different from FireRed?

No. Both versions share the same Kanto map and Sevii Islands layout. Only encounter tables and a few version-exclusive Pokemon differ.

Q: When can I first reach the Sevii Islands?

Right after defeating Blaine at the Cinnabar Gym. Bill invites you to One Island, and the Tri-Pass covers One, Two, and Three Island before you return to Kanto.

Q: Which HM opens the most of the pokemon leafgreen map?

HM03 Surf unlocks the largest portion, including Cinnabar Island, Seafoam Islands, the Power Plant, and the ferry routes around the Sevii Islands.

Q: Where is Mewtwo on the map?

Cerulean Cave, north of Cerulean City. The entrance opens only after becoming Champion, obtaining the National Pokedex, and finishing Celio's Ruby and Sapphire quest.

Plan Your Route

Pick up Fly on Route 16 as early as possible. One short detour cuts most cross-map travel time for the rest of the adventure.
