Rare Pokemon: The Four Fixed Legendaries
Pokemon LeafGreen rare Pokemon hunting starts with four one-time legendary encounters. Each one is a static overworld battle, so you always know exactly where to go and what to prepare.
Articuno - Lv 50
- Type: Ice / Flying
- Location: Seafoam Islands
- Requires: Surf and Strength to redirect the currents
Zapdos - Lv 50
- Type: Electric / Flying
- Location: Power Plant
- Requires: Surf east from Route 10
Moltres - Lv 50
- Type: Fire / Flying
- Location: Mt. Ember, One Island
- Requires: Travel north through Kindle Road
Mewtwo - Lv 70
- Type: Psychic
- Location: Cerulean Cave
- Requires: Champion title, National Pokedex, completed Network Machine quest
All four legendaries appear once per save file. Save directly before interacting with them. If you knock one out or the battle ends, the encounter is gone for that playthrough.
Roaming Legendaries: Raikou, Entei, Suicune
After you become Champion and reach the post-game stage, one Johto legendary begins roaming across Kanto. Which beast appears depends entirely on the starter you chose in Pallet Town.
Raikou
- Type: Electric, Lv 50
- Unlocked by: choosing Squirtle
Entei
- Type: Fire, Lv 50
- Unlocked by: choosing Bulbasaur
Suicune
- Type: Water, Lv 50
- Unlocked by: choosing Charmander
Roamers move to a new route whenever you change areas, so track their current location through the Pokedex and cut them off on connecting routes.
Roaming Pokemon attempt to flee on the first turn. Bring a fast Pokemon with a trapping move such as Mean Look, or spend your Master Ball to secure the catch immediately.
Rare Gifts and One-Time Encounters
Beyond legendaries, several valuable Pokemon are limited to a single chance per save file:
- Snorlax (Lv 30): two sleeping encounters on Route 12 and Route 16, woken with the Poke Flute from Lavender Town
- Eevee: one guaranteed gift in the Celadon Mansion area
- Lapras: one guaranteed gift from a Silph Co. employee in Saffron City
- Dome or Helix Fossil: choose only one inside Mt. Moon, then revive it on Cinnabar Island
- Pinsir: a rare Safari Zone encounter and a LeafGreen version exclusive
LeafGreen also carries its own exclusive wild Pokemon, including Vulpix, Bellsprout, Slowpoke, Staryu, Magmar, and Sandshrew. Expanded Sevii Islands areas add post-game Johto encounters such as Misdreavus, Sneasel, and Mantine.
FireRed counterparts such as Growlithe, Scyther, and Electabuzz do not appear as wild encounters in LeafGreen. Trading between versions is the only way to add those families to your collection.
Catching Rare Pokemon Step-by-Step
Stock Supplies
Buy plenty of Ultra Balls, healing items, and status recovery before leaving for any legendary hunt.
Build a Catcher
Bring a Pokemon that can lower HP safely and inflict Sleep or Paralysis, both of which improve catch rates.
Save Before the Encounter
Fixed legendaries allow no second attempt, so save right before triggering the battle.
Weaken Carefully
Reduce HP into the red without knocking the target out, then apply a status condition.
Throw and Persist
Keep throwing Ultra Balls every turn and heal your catcher as needed until the catch lands.
Before You Hunt:
- Save directly before every fixed encounter
- Carry 20 or more Ultra Balls
- Pack Awakenings and Paralyze Heals
- Bring a Sleep or Paralysis user
- Decide whether the Master Ball goes to Mewtwo or a roamer
You receive one Master Ball during the Silph Co. storyline. Most players spend it on Mewtwo or on a fleeing roamer, the two hunts where ball control matters most.
